Tenftory (テンフトリ, Tenfutori) is a Royal Bodyguard for 3rd Prince Zhang Lei.[1] He is sent by Zhang Lei to attend Kurapika's first round of Nen lessons and eventually has his Nen awakened by Kurapika.[2]
Appearance
Tenftory is a somewhat corpulent, bespectacled man. He has thick lips and a thin beard running along the edge of his jaw. He has dark hair and a light-colored Mohawk cut. As a Royal Bodyguard, he wears a black suit and a tie.[1]
Plot
Succession Contest arc
On the first day of the voyage, Tenftory is seen standing by as his team receives Coventoba, a personal soldier sent by 1st Prince Benjamin to join Zhang Lei's guard and spy on Zhang Lei after Benjamin retires from the banquet.[3]
Shortly after, Zhang Lei makes arrangements to have Kurapika come to Room 1003 and explain Nen to him, after identifying Kurapika as the guard who made the announcement mentioning Nen. Coventoba is one of the two guards posted outside Room 1003 when Kurapika arrives with 14th Prince Woble and 8th Queen Oito, and is the one to notify Zhang Lei of their arrival.[1]
Participants of the Nen training
Later that day, Zhang Lei is contacted by Room 1014 and agrees to send his bodyguards to learn Nen under Kurapika.[4] At 9:00 on the second day of the voyage, Tenftory turns up at Room 1014, keeping in mind Zhang Lei's orders for him to take note of who makes contact with Kurapika and deciding to pay particular attention to Furykov, sent by Benjamin; Danjin and Myuhan, sent by 4th Prince Tserriednich; and Maor and Longhi, sent by 5th Prince Tubeppa.[5]
Shortly after the participants of Kurapika's Nen lessons finish their introductions, Loberry, a servant of 10th Prince Kacho begins to panic at the sight of a strange woman that (unbeknownst to her) only she can see. As Loberry makes a commotion, the participants hear someone fall to the floor and turn to see Barrigen, guard of 13th Prince Marayam, fall to the floor clutching at a white band around his throat. Being one of the nearest to Barrigen, Tenftory approaches him to try and help him, but Barrigen quickly exsanguinates in front of him, surprising the participants. The "white band" slowly unwraps itself and reveals itself to be a snake as three other snakes slide out of Barrigen's clothes and hiss at the participants. Sakata quickly shoots the snakes as Tenftory slowly backs away.[6]
Kurapika gives the participants some time to decide whether to stay or leave, and they all choose to remain. He gives them their first exercise[7] and practice it until the lesson ends at 12:30.[8]
Kurapika talks to Belerainte as Satobi, Maor, and Tenftory watches
On the third day of the voyage, Tenftory returns to Room 1014 for Kurapika's second Nen lesson. After Myuhan dies in the same way Barrigen did, Tenftory stands and watches with his arms crossed as Maor and Satobi accuse Kurapika of being behind the attacks. He remains a silent spectator as Belerainte defends Kurapika in response by calling it stupid for Myuhan to relieve himself while in hostile territory, and when Kurapika calls Belerainte to the side to thank him for his support privately.[9]
On the ninth day of the voyage, Tenftory turns up as usual for Kurapika's Nen lessons. After discussing the large burst of aura Kurapika and Bill guessed was from either Room 1005, Room 1007, or Room 1009, Sakata tells Kurapika that the participants are beginning to question repeating the same training. Kurapika gathers the participants over to demonstrate and explain water divination to them. Tenftory stands behind Ladiolus and Yuri as he watches the demonstration. Shortly after, Kurapika explains that they would conduct the participants' Nen divination in another room to keep their Nen types confidential. Tenftory watches silently as Kurapika addresses some of the concerns other participants voice over what they feel are unnecessary steps Kurapika is taking.[10]
The participants watch intently as Ladiolus steps out of the room. Furykov observes her flow of Nen and voices his opinion that Kurapika is not controlling her, though he says that he would have to see more cases to confirm. Tenftory watches Maor go through the process next, and hears Furykov state his opinion that what Kurapika had said to address their concerns was true. Tenftory hears Kurapika announce that a few more of them might be able to go through the same awakening that day. After Kurapika ends the lesson for the day, Hashito approaches him and asks if he could have his Nen divined in exchange for Tenftory awakening his Nen last, but is rejected because Kurapika believes that he would be too fatigued if his Nen was awakened since Hashito had not practiced the basics.[11]
Zhang Lei gifts Tenftory a coin
On the tenth day, Tenftory turns up at Room 1014 for Kurapika's Nen lesson. Kurapika and Bill invite Longhi into Room 1014's master bedroom to have her Nen divined, but takes an unnaturally long amount of time, prompting Sakata to knock and ask if anything is wrong. Kurapika steps out and says that negotiations are taking a while because they and Longhi are unable to agree on the terms of the truce, but promises to clear up any doubts the participants have later. Kurapika steps back in and, a while later, returns to Room 1014's living room together with Longhi. Kurapika apologizes and explains that they are still unable to agree on the details, and invites Tenftory in to have his Nen divined.[12]
In Room 1003 at 13:30 that day,[13] Tenftory reports to Zhang Lei that with his Nen awakened, he feels stronger and that the way he perceives the world has changed. He praises the majesty of Zhang Lei's Guardian Spirit Beast, and Zhang Lei rewards him with a coin that his Guardian Spirit Beast had produced, telling him that he was the first to receive one. [2] Tenftory tells Zhang Lei that Woble and 5th Prince Tubeppa would defer the throne to him if they were the final three Princes remaining in the succession contest. Zhang Lei asks if they had agreed to put it in writing. Tenftory tells him that they did, and that in return, Woble is asking that Sakata and Hashito extend their support indefinitely. Zhang Lei rewards him with a second coin, and tells him that once he reaches a certain number of coins, he would be rewarded even further. Zhang Lei also says that if Tenftory carries the coins with him at all times, they would surely bring him good fortune. He expresses his humble pleasure at being rewarded with the coin.[13] At Coventoba's request, he shows him the coin.[14]
On the eleventh day of the voyage, Zhang Lei has Kurapika contacted[15] to help identify the function of the coins produced by his Guardian Spirit Beast. When Kurapika arrives, he helps Zhang Lei realize that he had already essentially confirmed his hypothesis that the coins change after ten days, and after pointing out that the point of currency was to change hands, Kurapika asks if there was a difference in appearance between the coins he owned and the coins he gave away. Upon hearing this, Tenftory notices that his coin has a different appearance, and passes it to Zhang Lei for them to observe. They see that the back of Zhang Lei's coin has an image of his Guardian Spirit Beast, and the image of Tenftory's coin has an image of Zhang Lei on it, and conclude that the effect of the coins can differ depending on who is holding them. Kurapika asks Zhang Lei to pass a coin to Tenftory to confirm this, but Zhang Lei instead gifts Kurapika the single '10' coin instead. Kurapika hesitantly accepts it, and all parties see that the number and design changed, and the '10' coin with Zhang Lei's Guardian Spirit Beast behind it now became a '1' coin with Zhang Lei behind it. Kurapika returns the coin, and the design reverts as well. Tenftory watches as Kurapika explains his theory that the coins could be used to awaken Nen.[16]
Abilities & Powers
Nen
Tenftory had his Aura Nodes fully opened by Kurapika's Stealth Dolphin. He should currently be in the process of learning Ten to contain the leaking aura.[11]

| The user of Erigeron has the ability to dramatically accelerate the growth of a living being by bringing the palms of their hands close to it. By using this ability on a seed inside a glass of water, it is possible to make it sprout in mere moments. Bill, the ability's original owner, told Maor that he can use Erigeron on humans to improve their Nen abilities, although the effects on untrained or unskilled individuals are weak. Tenftory received this ability via Kurapika's Stealth Dolphin in order to awaken his Nen, and it was returned to Bill after one use.[11] | |
