Hashito (ハシトウ, Hashitou) is one of 3rd Prince Zhang Lei's Royal Bodyguards. Zhang Lei assigned him and fellow Royal Guard Sakata to guard 14th Prince Woble on the first day, and they have been guarding her since.[1]
Appearance
Hashito has small, round eyes, a dark unibrow that becomes thicker towards the tips, a big, flat nose, a small mouth with thick lips, and a prominent square chin. His voluminous fair hair is neatly combed. As a Royal Bodyguard, he wears a black suit and a tie.[1]
Personality
Hashito is even more calm and reserved than his calm and reserved fellow guard Sakata. He does not say much at all unless directly spoken to, but has shown himself to be at least moderately knowledgeable and flexible in mind. Despite not being aware of Nen before the voyage begins, within a day of Kurapika's explanation of what Nen is and demonstration of its capabilities, Hashito seems willing to cautiously accept its existence,[2] and roughly a week later, seems to completely acceptance its existence, having enough respect for its capabilities to request to have his Nen awakened despite not being a participant of Kurapika's Nen lessons.[3]
Hashito is diligent in his duties, capable and intelligent enough to recognize when he should act, and always willing to act. Zhang Lei believes him and Sakata to be skilled and capable of offering great advice. However, since that statement was made before Zhang Lei had a deep appreciation of Nen and its capabilities, it can be cautiously assumed that the great advice he believes his men can offer does not extend to Nen.[1] Though no words are seen exchanged between him and Sakata, Hashito is capable of supporting him efficiently, restraining Loberry as Sakata contacted authorities to report her suspicious behavior right before Barrigen was killed,[4] and standing guard to ensure the other Nen lesson participants did not attack Kurapika as Sakata checked in with him.[5] He is not overconfident, instinctively able to recognize his inability to defend against Nen attacks despite not being able to see Nen, and willing to ask for assistance to make up for this deficiency.[3]
Plot
Succession Contest arc
On the first day of the voyage, after consulting his guards and discovering that none of them know about the "Nen" mentioned by a bodyguard from Room 1014 over the emergency channel,[6] 3rd Prince Zhang Lei contacts Room 1014 in order to get information about Nen, and Kurapika turns up to participate in this exchange, accompanied by 14th Prince Woble and her mother 8th Queen Oito for their safety due to their low manpower.[7] In exchange for this information, Zhang Lei orders his guards Hashito and Sakata to guard 14th Prince Woble until the next banquet, on the eighth day, to make up for the loss of her guards to an enemy attack earlier in the day. Upon hearing this, 1st Queen Unma orders Slakka to follow the two back to Room 1014 and spy on Woble and her interactions instead of Zhang Lei, who he was originally ordered to spy on by 2nd Queen Duazul. As the three head to Room 1003, Slakka tells Sakata and Hashito to let him know if they got any information, threatening to go off the rails if he did not get any.[1]
When the group returns to Room 1014, they notice that Babimyna, guard of 1st Prince Benjamin, assigned to guard and spy on Woble earlier that day, is present. Slakka goes over and speaks to him, while Kurapika updates his fellow guard Bill about their new manpower arrangement. Slakka introduces himself and his affiliation to Babimyna, and to fulfill their obligations toward their respective Queens, they decide that Babimyna will watch Sakata and Slakka will watch Hashito.[1]
The bodyguards amazed that the "cockroach" is under the influence of Nen
The new guards notice Woble's guards searching for something, but cannot identify what they are searching for, and their search is eventually interrupted by the arrival of Maor, Captain of 5th Prince Tubeppa's guard, who Kurapika arranged to form a truce with in exchange for information on Nen earlier that day. Kurapika asks all of their new guards to be present during this information exchange, so that they can verify that the information is shared equally and reduce any lingering doubts. Hashito watches as Kurapika and Babimyna have a short dispute about where to have the discussion and whether Woble and Oito should be present, which is resolved by the arrival of Maor, who agrees with Kurapika.[2]
In Room 1014's master bedroom, Kurapika gives a quick explanation of what Nen beasts are, how they function, and that the nature of their Princes affects their form, appearance, and abilities. Mid-explanation, Kurapika spots a cockroach, and Woble's new guards see that he is unnaturally distracted. Oito orders the guards to get rid of it, insisting that they smash the disgusting creature elsewhere, and the new guards begin to approach the cockroach. They are interrupted by Kurapika calling Bill and Shimano over, who asks them to capture it with Nen and explains that he would use the cockroach as a demonstration of what Nen can do. Kurapika explains how Bill's Nen would help capture and manipulate the cockroach, and the new guards watch as Bill gestures and swings his arms at the cockroach. They see that the cockroach has stopped moving, and Bill asks for requests on how to control the cockroach's movements enough to prove that it is being controlled. Babimyna asks for the cockroach to fly and land on Bill's pen, and as it takes off in the air, Hashito exclaims in surprise, never having seen a cockroach fly before. The guards are captivated by its movements, and Bill holds the pen, which the cockroach lands on, close to them so they can inspect it. Sakata decides that Nen is the only possible explanation, and Hashito notes that it does not look like a robot, then Bill takes it away to be disposed off.[2]
As Bill leaves, Kurapika lets the five guards know that it is possible for them to learn Nen in the span of two weeks, more specifically learn enough basics to reduce the risks of being defenseless against a Nen attack. He lets them know that he plans to let all the Princes know of his plans to teach Nen, and offer them the chance to participate. The guards begin to mull over the new proposal.[2] Hashito moves out of the master bedroom together with Bill and Slakka, and lets the other guards watch over Woble and Oito.[8] At roughly 6:00 a.m. the next day, Hashito hears Oito scream from his post near Room 1014's entrance, and rushes into the master bedroom with Room 1014's four new guards, only to be reassured by Kurapika that Oito just had a nightmare and instructed to return to their stations.[9]
Participants of the Nen training
Nen lessons begin at 9:00 a.m. on the second day of the voyage, and Sakata, Hashito, and Slakka stand near the back of the living room as the sixteen new faces wait for Kurapika to begin the lesson.[9] They remain there as the participants introduce themselves, but after they finish their introduction, 10th Prince Kacho's servant representative causes a commotion, and 13th Prince Marayam representative guard Barrigen quickly dies from exsanguination induced by a Nen attack.[10] As Sakata contacts the authorities to report the matter, Hashito restrains Loberry and keeps her arms behind her back. Hashito returns to the back of the room after Loberry is taken away, then watches as Kurapika refuses to return the participants their weapons, letting them decide if they want to continue.[4] During lessons, Kurapika notes that 9th Prince Halkenburg's representatitves Shedule and Yuhirai are outputting an abnormal amount of Nen, and asks to speak with them after class. Sakata notes this, and at 12:30 p.m., Hashito watches as Sakata requests to be present at their discussion after class.[11]
Belerainte helps Kurapika mediate his tension with the other guards
At 10:05 a.m., during the Nen lessons on the third day of the voyage, 4th Prince Tserriednich's guard Myuhan is found exsanguinated in the toilet, much like Barrigen was the previous day. He spectates as Maor and 7th Prince Luzurus' representative Satobi accuse Kurapika of using the lessons as a way to lure and eliminate them one by one. He also silently watches later as Kurapika calls 13th Prince Marayam's representative and Hunter Belerainte to the side to thank him for his support.[12]
During Nen lessons on the ninth day of the voyage, Slakka, Sakata, and Hashito continue assisting Kurapika despite them originally being assigned to guard Woble only until the previous day, this time guarding the entrance of Room 1014's master bedroom so that Kurapika and Bill can privately assist participants in divining their Nen type. At the end of lessons that day, Hashito enters Room 1014's master bedroom with Sakata behind him and requests to have his Nen divined in exchange for Tenftory, Zhang Lei's representative for the Nen lessons, to go last, explaining that he would feel better if either him or Sakata used Nen earlier. Kurapika agrees with his motivations, but subtly refuses his request by letting Hashito know that he would temporarily suffer immense fatigue because he had not practiced the basics like the students had.[3]
During the Nen lessons on the tenth day, Kurapika and Bill invite Tubeppa's representative guard Longhi into Room 1014's master bedroom to have her Nen divined. Their exchange is unnaturally long, prompting Sakata to knock and interrupt to ask if anything is wrong while Hashito stands with a gun drawn on standby. Kurapika explains that negotiations about the terms of a truce are taking up their time, but promises to clear up any doubts the participants have later. Kurapika goes back into Room 1014's master bedroom, and when he returns later with Longhi, he apologizes and explains that they were unable to agree on the details of the agreement, though they both wanted it and invites Tenftory in to have his Nen divined.[5]
At 1:30 p.m. in Room 1003 on the eleventh day, Tenftory informs Zhang Lei of Woble and Tubeppa's agreement to defer the throne to Zhang Lei in the event that they are the final three Princes remaining, in exchange for Hashito and Sakata extending their support indefinitely. Hashito and Sakata also demand that they be allowed to follow Kurapika whenever he goes to Room 1005 as part of Woble's alliance with Tubeppa in the interest of information sharing.[13]
Kurapika shares details surrounding Prince Camilla
Later and back in Room 1014, Kurapika makes preparations for the second round of Nen lessons, beginning the next day, with the same format except that 2nd Prince Camilla had now chosen to send representatives. After Kurapika confirms Benjamin's representatives with Babimyna and informs him about Camilla sending representatives, Kurapika turns to Sakata and Hashito and asks them for their thoughts on why Camilla changed her mind about sending representatives. Sakata suggests she might be verifying Kurapika's claims, pointing out that she knew what happened at his Nen lessons, so there must be some benefit to her if she is sending representatives. Hashito continues by elaborating that the reason could genuinely be to take the course, but it could also be to gather intelligence, assassination, alliance building, or just general strategy, basically any of many possible reasons. Kurapika then gives Bill and Shimano instructions on what to do and expect.[14]
