A Struggle in the Mist (霧の中の攻防, Kiri no Naka no Kōbō) is the 2nd volume of the Hunter × Hunter manga series. It was released by Shueisha on September 2nd, 1998 in Japan and by Viz Media on May 4th, 2005 in English.
Bored by the first phase, Hisoka has decided that he will "help out" in the selection process by using his playing cards to kill the examinees he deems unworthy. Many nearby join up to attack him, but Hisoka's superior skills leave them all dead in seconds. Fortunately, he decides Leorio, Kurapika, and Gon all pass his test, and they arrive relatively unharmed at the site of the Second Phase.
The next examiners, the Gourmet HuntersMenchi and Buhara, reveal themselves shortly and explain that the focus of the Second Phase is cooking. The first part of the phase is to hunt and roast Great Stamps found in the surrounding woods to satisfy Buhara's massive appetite. The more demanding Menchi, however, challenges the examinees to create a dish almost no one there has heard of: sushi. But when one examinee accidentally reveals the details of the dish, Menchi becomes even more critical of the examinees' dishes. Everyone unsurprisingly fails, and ChairmanNetero is called in to resolve the situation. A replacement test is given, which requires the examinees to dive into Split Mountain to retrieve and boil the egg of a Spider Eagle. Gon, Kurapika, Leorio, and Killua all pass easily, and the remaining examinees are transported via Netero's airship to the next exam site.
Forty examinees remain at the start of the Third Phase: Trick Tower managed by the Blacklist HunterLippo and two other examiners. They have 72 hours to reach the bottom alive or they are disqualified. Gon, Leorio, Kurapika, and Killua stumble upon "The Path of Majority Rules" method of descent, but are joined by a fifth examinee, the "Rookie Crusher" Tonpa, who takes the Hunter Exam every year solely to sabotage the efforts of others. The five eventually reach an arena where they must win a best of five matches against prisoners whose sentences will be reduced by one year for every hour that they delay an examinee. After Tonpa quickly surrenders to Bendot, Gon evens the score by using his speed to beat Sedokan in his challenge involving candles.
