The Forty Spells (40(しゅ)()()()()()()()()()呪文(スペル), Yonjū Shu no Superu) is the 132nd chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis

The ten new recruits wait around the Starting Point, and Jispa arrives to take them to the group's hideout, using "Accompany" to travel to Kosofftro. Wearing a large-brimmed hat and carrying a sword, the man welcomes the new members and tells them to remember his name since they'll need it to get to the base with a spell. Abengane realizes how cautious the group is being, transporting them to a player and not directly to their base in order to keep it secret. The new members are told that they will have the spell system explained to them and then travel to Masadora to buy spell cards. As they make their way further into the forest, Jispa tells them that the cards come in packs of three, each costing Jenny Symbol 201110,000. He adds that if one collects all 40 spell cards, they can be traded in for a rank-SS specified slot card called "Angel's Breath," a card so rare that no one owns it.

Abengane asks him how he knows that, and Jispa says that "List" can be used to find out a card's current conversion number and the number of people who have it. He then tells them that their group has managed to collect all 40 spell cards, saying that they want to exchange them for "Angel's Breath" as soon as possible. However, he adds that they need a card called "Fortress" first, telling the new members that the card is their top priority. The group eventually reaches the hideout inside a cave, with one member explaining that there are close and long-range spells. The former has a radius of 20 meters, while the latter works anywhere on the island. The member stresses being able to estimate the distance for close-range spells, especially when encountering an opponent. He tells them that as long as they have their binder open when attacked, and they have a defensive spell, there will be a 15-second delay for the attack spell while they decide whether they want to use their own spell or not. Another member hands out sheets of paper with all 40 spells on them, telling the new recruits to memorize them in one hour since the information is vital to their plan.

Reading through the list, Puhat notes that while there are more defensive spell cards than attack spell cards, the most valuable of the former is still vulnerable against an attack. A member reminds them of the one-hour time frame and says that those who don't memorize them will be assigned to running errands for the group. He also stresses as Jispa said earlier, that the card they need most at the moment is "Fortress," which protects a page of nine specified slot cards from spells.

Abengane and Puhat are the first to finish memorizing the list, and the member asks them to name the defensive spells they monopolize as well as the total conversion limits of those cards. While Abengane whispers the answers to him and passes, Puhat confidently asks for a tougher question, and the member asks him to name all the spell cards that can be destroyed by "Compromise," as well as all the spell cards that can be gained in exchange. Puhat whispers the answer to him, but the member says that "Holy Water" cannot be destroyed, telling him to learn them over again. Meanwhile, back in Antokiba, Gon and Killua face each other in the finals of the rock-paper-scissors tournament, and Killua clinches the win by using rock with his left hand. The judge presents him with the Sword of Truth, which immediately transforms into the card once Killua touches it. He sees that it's a specified slot card, and the two rejoice that it's their first one.
